Side dish for sambar

1.Gosthu

  • Brinjal-1/4 kg
  • small onion-1/4 kg
  • green chilli-3
  • curry leaves
  • tamarind - little

Fry in little oil and grid :

  • Red Chilli-3
  • Coriander seeds-2 spoon
  • Channa dhal-1 spoon


Fry Red chillies,Channa dal, coriander seeds in oil seperately , grind all together and keep it aside.

Fry chopped brinjal in little oil and mash it slightly and keey aside.


Heat oil, sputter mustard seed, add chopped onion,chilli,curryleaves.Now add mashed brinjal, and tamarind paste and the grinded powder.add little water. allow it to boil for some time.Remove from flame Serve it with idly or dosa.

2.Gosthu

  • Carrot-1
  • Brinjal-3
  • onion-2
  • tomato-1
  • green chilli-3
  • tamarind - little
  • Sambar milagai podi- 1/4 spoon
  • Moong Dhal-1 cup (boiled)

Chop carrot ,brinjal,onion,tomato finely


Fry in little oil and grid :

  • Red Chilli-3
  • Coriander seeds-2 spoon
  • Channa dhal-1 spoon

Fry Red chillies,Channa dal, coriander seeds in oil , grind all together and keep it aside.

Heat oil, sputter mustard seed, add chopped onion,chilli,tomato,curryleaves.Now add carrot,brinjal and fry for few minutes.Add water, salt, sambar milagai podi and cook for few mins. add moong dhal.Boil until the vegetables are cooked.Now add the grinded items and boil.Before removing it from flame add tamarind paste.Serve it with idly.

3. Gosthu

  • Mustard seeds
  • UrudDhal
  • Curry Leaves
  • Onion-1 chopped finely
  • Tomato-2 chopped finely
  • Green chillies-1
  • Red Chillies-3
  • channa dhal-1/2 spoon
  • Coriander seeds- 2 spoon
  • coconut - 4 spoon

Roast Red chillies,Channa dal, coriander in oil seperately. Add coconut and grind with all the roasted items.


Heat oil and sputter mustard,then add urud dhal, onion,curry leaves,green chilli,tomato one by one and now add water & salt. heat it until it is cooked.Now add the grinded paste and cook for 2 mins and serve with idly or dosa.
[Note: u can add boiled potato too and can have it as a side dish for chappathi]

4. Easy to cook Gosthu

  • Mustard seeds
  • UrudDhal
  • Curry Leaves
  • Onion-1 chopped finely
  • Tomato-1 chopped finely
  • Green chillies-1
  • Sambar Milagai podi- 1/2 spoon
  • Besan flour - 1 spoon

Heat oil in kadai,sputter Mustard seeds,UrudDhal, CurryLeaves

Then add onion & green chllies, fry for 1 minutes,then add tomato and fry. Now add Sambar Milagaipodi and salt. pour 1 cup of water.Keep the kadai closed for few minutes. Mix the besan flour in water (donot mix it like a paste let it be watery).When it is cooked add the besan flour to make the gosthu thick.Keep it in flame for 1 min and then serve with dosa or idly.
